Social media encourages dialogs that span organizational boundaries, however that very power and flexibility also introduces risks to an organization. The sophistication and power of data mining when put against bits and pieces of information scattered across the Internet is enhanced by the relevance and context given to information through social media dialog.  Simply creating guidelines and policy will not fully address this risk as more “information puzzle parts” find there way into publically accessible locations on the Internet.  An individual tweet, the relationship between the tweeter and the follower, the status updates on Facebook or LinkedIn – all add up and paint a more complete picture of the topic.  Highly regulated industries like health care, banking and financial services, insurance, and bio-pharma are typically more conservative in adoption of social computing and social media tools.  However, its not the quantity of information that has the potential to reveal what should be kept internal, it is the quality and clarity of the interconnecting parts. Nothing has a greater potential to introduce clarity like social media footprints across the Internet – and that poses a challenge to those that seek its benefit.
